One of the most common problems we see at Tranco Transmission is that automatic transmission fluid is rarely changed at the proper time. Most dealerships will tell you that transmission fluid is a lifetime fluid. This is entirely false. Transmission fluid and the filter should be changed every 25,000 to 35,000 miles. When you think of the cost of changing transmission fluid at the proper time versus a transmission overhaul, the expenses aren't even close! It only makes sense that time, heat, excessive use, aggressive use, and hauling heavy loads increases the breakdown of any transmission fluid. Here are some things to do to significantly prolong the life of your transmission: Maintain a transmission fluid change every 25,000 - 35,000 miles Check for transmission leaks Make sure the transmission fluids are correct If the engine temperature is higher than what you're accustomed to seeing the excessive heat can have an adverse effect on the transmission as well. If you don't know whether your vehicle has been serviced or you have high mileage and it hasn't been serviced during the recommended timeframe, it is best to leave the fluid alone because by changing the fluid it loosens accumulated varnish deposits which cause sticking of control valves in the valve body. It would be best to bring it to Tranco Transmission, the transmission specialists in Albuquerque for your transmission service. The transmission fluid level should be checked periodically. This can be done on most vehicles and should be done after the vehicle has been driven and the fluid is hot. You can perform this by checking the dipstick while the engine is idling and the transmission is in park to verify the fluid level. If the level is low, gradually add more fluid to bring it up to (but not past) the full mark. If the transmission fluid is leaking, the rear seal or pan gasket may need to be replaced. This repair is not difficult or expensive to replace. Tranco Transmission highly recommends before you do any of this make sure you get the correct type of fluid for your transmission. Refer to the owner's manual or markings on the dipstick if in doubt. We hope you feel we are also a great resource so call us any time with your transmission questions.
