The term "wisdom teeth" refers to the third molars in your mouth. It is common for people not to have these molars until their late teens or early twenties because they are the very last ones to grow. There is typically insufficient space in the jaw for the wisdom teeth to grow regularly, and when they erupt, they may not be aligned correctly. There are situations in which the wisdom teeth remain buried beneath the surface of the gums and grow at an angle towards the front of the mouth. As they continue to grow, they come into contact with the second molar, which could result in harm to the tooth. Additionally, the pressure might transfer to other teeth, causing those teeth to shift position and become crowded. When only a part of a wisdom tooth breaks through the gums, it might be challenging to clean the area around the tooth that is exposed. If you have cavities in your wisdom teeth, they can quickly spread to the second molars adjacent to them, causing dental difficulties. There are several warning signals that could indicate that there are issues with your wisdom teeth. If you notice any of these symptoms, bring them up with your dentist when you have your next appointment.
If your wisdom tooth is growing irregularly, is positioned horizontally or is angled toward or away from the neighbouring tooth the procedure will be done by an oral surgeon due to its complexity.
